Biography
Since first lighting up the world with their
fusion of country and soul, The War And Treaty have become one
of the most iconic husband-and-wife duos in music. Michael and
Tanya Trotter’s talent and originality have earned them
two Grammy nominations, back-to-back Duo/Group of the Year wins
at the Americana Music Honors & Awards, and performances at
stadiums with the Rolling Stones and Zach Bryan. Their new album
Plus One offers 18 songs that double down on the sense of togetherness
fuelling their music, providing hope, healing, and joy. Mainly
produced by Michael and recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals,
the album blends gospel, bluegrass, contemporary country, classic
soul, symphonic pop, and folk-rock, partly crafted with producers
Jonathan Singleton, John Shanks, and Jesse Frasure. Tracks like
“Love Like Whiskey,” “Can I Get An Amen,”
and “Carried Away” reveal their love story, musicianship,
and commitment to uplifting others through both intimate storytelling
and electrifying sound.
Now based in Nashville, the duo first met at
a Maryland music festival in 2010, quickly discovering an undeniable
chemistry despite their different backgrounds—Tanya having
grown up near Washington, D.C. and Michael teaching himself piano
while serving in the military. They co-founded The War And Treaty,
sharing stages with Chris Stapleton and Al Green, performing twice
at the White House, and collaborating on Zach Bryan’s platinum-certified
“Hey Driver.” For the Trotters, their greatest achievement
is their devoted fanbase. “We hear from veterans and young
girls inspired by Tanya, and from couples who’ve made our
songs their first dance,” Michael says. Touring in support
of Plus One, they hope to provide a live space for connection,
love, and shared joy, inviting fans to bring a “plus one”
and extend the spirit of love far and wide.
