Biography

Swedish Born Nils Landgren first began playing drums at the tender age of six. He discovered the trombone seven years later and never looked back. Landgren studied classical trombone between 1971 and 1978 at the music college in Karlstad and at the university in Arvika. He would meet the legendary Swedish Folk-Jazz pioneer Bengt-Arne Wallin, as well as trombonist Eje Thelin while studying. In fact, it was Thelin who encouraged Landgren to explore improvisation and develop his own style.

After graduating Landgren decided to move to Stockholm to work as a professional trombone player. He would soon be touring with BjÖrn Skif (Sweden’s most successful pop star at the time). Collaboration success continued when Landgren joined Thad Jones’ big band project “Ball Of Fire” in 1981.

Landgren has explored many styles and genres including jazz, rock, soul and big band as well sharing his talent with Europe’s pop giants ABBA. He has contributed to at least 500 albums and worked with artists such as Wyclef Jean, The Crusaders, Eddie Harris and Herbie Hancock.

Landgren is known as ‘The Man With The Red Horn’. He is successful not only as a trombonist, but also as a tasteful tenor vocalist. His live performances have always attracted large audiences worldwide.
