What is Black Pumas?
Black Pumas is a Grammy-nominated American soul
and psychedelic rock duo based in Austin, Texas. The band consists
of vocalist Eric Burton and producer/guitarist Adrian Quesada. Their
debut album was released in 2019 to critical acclaim, leading to
multiple Grammy nominations.
History of Black Pumas
The duo met in Austin, Texas at a writing session
in 2017. Burton was a newcomer on the Austin music scene, having
recently moved from Los Angeles. Quesada had been a part of the
Austin music scene for decades as the founding member of Grupo Fantasma
and Brownout. The two quickly connected over their shared love of
classic soul music and began writing songs together. In 2018 they
released their self-titled debut EP to critical acclaim. The EP
featured five songs including their breakthrough single “Colors”
which was featured in an Apple commercial and was nominated for
a Grammy Award for Best American Roots Performance. Their debut
album was released in 2019 and included their hit single “Fire”
which was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance.
Music Style of Black Pumas
Black Pumas’ music blends elements of classic
soul and psychedelic rock with modern production techniques. Burton’s
powerful vocals sit atop Quesada’s intricate guitar work to
create a unique sound that has been described as “psychedelic
soul”. Their live shows are known for their energetic performances
and are often compared to those of legendary acts like James Brown
and Sly & The Family Stone.
Collaborations
Black Pumas have collaborated with numerous artists
including Kelsey Wilson, Angie McMahon, Jehnny Beth, and Lauren
Ruth Ward. They have also been featured on tracks by other artists
including Anderson .Paak, Kali Uchis, and Gorillaz.
