Biography

London based, Lekan Babalola started honing his percussion skills in his father’s Yoruba Christian church. Further experience would be gained by joining Gasper Lawal in 1980.

Babalola has performed with Fela Kuti, Miles Davis, Ernest Ranglin, Roy Ayres, Tony Allen, Branford Marsalis, Pinse Saul, Queen Salawa, Abeni, Axelle Red, Kilb Band, Jean Toussaint, Bola Are and Tessa Souter.

“Songs of Icon”, released in June 2006 fuses Babalola’s many influences and brings Jazz, African and Broken Beat into the 21st century. At least four tracks have received the remix treatment by renowned producers such as I G Culture, Mark De Clive and Phil Asher.
